Senior Data Engineer – Analytics & Reporting

Location: Auckland

This role is responsible for developing, maintaining, and modernising our data pipelines, enterprise data platform, and reporting capabilities, while also providing technical leadership, people mentorship, and work management support within the team. It helps set technical direction, guide delivery priorities, support developer growth, and ensure team outcomes are delivered effectively. This role works with the Cloud Data Platform (CDP) within the Apex Investment Administration New Zealand business, which provides fund administration, wealth administration, unit pricing, and custody services to investment managers who collectively have over $140 billion of assets.

Job responsibilities

  • Developing, maintaining, and enhancing Apex New Zealand’s modern data platform including:
    • Creating reusable data models for financial reporting.
    • Writing and maintaining reports and dashboards.
    • Ensuring security and reliability of the data, creating automated tests and working with stakeholders to ensure data accuracy.
    • Creating and maintaining technical documentation.
  • Break down complex deliverables into manageable stages of work, provide estimates to internal and external stakeholders, and support prioritisation, planning, and allocation of team activities.
  • Design and develop advanced SSRS reports to visualize complex datasets, ensuring high performance and user-friendly interfaces.
  • Own the delivery and governance of data egress to clients through Snowflake data sharing, SSRS, and client-facing Power BI reporting, ensuring secure, accurate, and timely distribution of data products.
  • Delivering Quality – instilling and maintaining a focus on how quickly the team are learning and how we can improve the overall data platform.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies and actively contribute to team planning, work sequencing, delivery tracking, and continuous improvement of team ways of working.
  • Manage, mentor, and support direct reports through regular coaching, work allocation, performance guidance, code peer reviews, technical direction, knowledge sharing, and development support to build capability across the team.
  • Demonstrate strong work management capability, balancing team priorities, multiple projects, stakeholder expectations, production support, and priority incidents as required.
  • Provide end-to-end ownership and senior technical leadership across the enterprise data platform and reporting capability, setting technical direction and ensuring reliability, performance, governance, and continuous improvement of scheduled jobs, data pipelines, and reporting services.
  • Lead production support for data processing failures and priority incidents, restoring critical services, resolving root causes, and strengthening platform resilience through preventative improvements.

Required Skills:

  • Advanced SQL skills are essential, including the ability to perform root cause analysis to identify and resolve data processing and reporting issues.
  • Experience creating reports and dashboards with tools like SSRS and PowerBI.
  • Strong experience designing, building, loading, maintaining, and optimising robust and reusable datasets in SQL Server, Snowflake and dbt.
  • Proven experience within enterprise data platform environments, including data ingestion, transformation, orchestration, monitoring, governance, infrastructure support, production support, and data platform maintenance.
  • Experience managing enterprise cloud data platforms, including user administration, security controls, role-based access control, and cost/performance optimisation across production environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor developers, provide technical direction, manage team workload, and support delivery planning in a senior technical role.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to ask the right questions, liaise with internal and external stakeholders, identify issues, and challenge constructively where required.

Beneficial Skills:

  • Cloud platform exposure is highly preferred, particularly Snowflake, Azure Ecosystem, Azure DevOps, and Azure Data Factory.
  • Data modelling, data processing & data migration, ETL/ELT techniques e.g. Fivetran, dbt.
  • Investment or Financial industry experience
