We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Backend Engineer Intern to join our Team

You will be part of our IT Engineering community. You will learn about the ING Way of Working and our technology platforms, which enables our ING business to build application that reach millions of customers. As an intern you will be allocated to one of our projects and be given the opportunity to contribute to our code base and make impact to our customers. During your internship you will learn new technologies, new engineering methodologies and you will be invited to share your learnings and experiences with other passionate engineers. You will be invited to join all the rituals and ceremonies of our squads and be treated equally. As such we look forward to your contributions.

Your key responsibilities:

As a Backend Engineer Intern, you will:

• Support the implementation of new backend features and improvements to existing systems, following standards and best practices.
• Assist in identifying defects and proposing solutions under the guidance of senior engineers.
• Help review logs, metrics, and data to detect issues and potential improvements across the squad’s digital products.
• Learn and support the use of continuous integration and deployment pipelines in accordance with internal policies.
• Contribute to understanding and using different environments (development, integration, production) within the software lifecycle.
• Collaborate in creating and running basic tests to ensure correct backend behavior.
• Become familiar with cybersecurity principles, performance optimization, and engineering best practices.

• Basic proficiency in software development using Java.
• Familiarity with backend frameworks such as Spring Boot.
• Understanding of secure and clean coding principles, and interest in learning automated and unit testing.
• Familiarity with source control and CI/CD tools (e.g., Git, Azure DevOps).
• Willingness to work in a collaborative Scrum environment and learn from senior engineers.
• Curiosity about backend fundamentals such as APIs, databases, performance, logging, and observability.
